Riverwalk Jazz Featuring
the Jim Cullum Jazz Band with Special Guest
Dick Hyman

Thu, Feb. 11, 2010
7:30 pm

River Walk Jazz

As heard on Public Radio International, Riverwalk Jazz with The Jim Cullum Jazz Band and Special Guest Stride Pianist Dick Hyman is coming to Corpus Christi! This live performance will not be broadcast but will give you a chance to see the performers as they would be performing on the radio program. The Jim Cullum Jazz Band has appeared in such major venues as Carnegie hall, Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap, major worldwide jazz festivals, and stars in its own public radio series, Riverwalk Jazz, broadcasting since 1987, heard on over 150 Public Radio stations nationwide and on the internet.

The Jim Cullum Jazz Band plays jazz in the classic manner, that is, in the style of small, hot ensembles prior to WWII. The band's repertoire covers a lot of ground--from 19th-century cakewalks to the small pre-war Benny Goodman ensembles. The core of the band's music consists of the sounds of Jelly Roll Morton, Original Dixieland Jazz Band, New Orleans Rhythm Kings, King Oliver Creole Jazz Band, Louis Armstrong, and Sidney Bechet, as well as a heavy emphasis on Bix Beiderbecke and Hoagy Carmichael. In keeping with the band's historical point of view, period instruments and performance practices are often used. Each member of the band is a specialist in historically informed jazz styles.

Special Guest Dick Hyman
Throughout a busy musical career that got underway in the early '50s, Dick Hyman has functioned as a pianist, organist, arranger, music director, and compose. His versatility in all of these areas has resulted in film scores, orchestral compositions, concert appearances and well over 100 albums recorded under his own name. While developing a masterful facility for improvisation in his own piano style, Mr. Hyman has also investigated ragtime and the earliest periods of jazz and has researched and recorded the piano music of scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, James P. Johnson, Zez Confrey, Eubie blake and Fats Waller, which he often features in his frequent recitals.

In addition to his activities in the jazz and concert worlds, Mr. Hyman acted as music director for such television programs as Benny Goodman's final appearance on PBS and for In Performance at the White House. In years past, Dick Hyman was music director for Arthur Godfrey and orchestrator of the hit musical Sugar Babies. He has served as composer/arranger/conductor/pianist for the Woody Allen films Zelig, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Broadway Danny Rose, Stardust Memories, Hannah and Her Sisters, Radio Days, Bullets Over Broadway, Mighty Aphrodite, Everyone Says 'I Love You', Sweet and Lowdown, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion and Melinda and Melinda. Other scores have included Moonstruck, Scott Joplin, King of Ragtime, The Lemon Sisters, and Alan and Naomi.
